California ends seven year fight as withholding tax becomes law. Gov. Reagan to sign at LAX after New York trip. About 8 million workers and 400,000 employers affected. effective Jan 1. Revenue plan includes $501 million tax rise and $420 million withholding intake this year.

Lompoc Council Allows Refusal of Refuse Rate Payment

The Lompoc City Council approved a plan to allow residents to withhold the $1 monthly refuse rate until a court ruling on the rates. The 4-1 vote keeps utility service on for those who refuse, while city officials warn the debt could grow if court decisions go against the city. Mayor Art Scott proposed placing paid amounts into a 5 percent accruing fund with potential refunds if the court rules against the city.

Lompoc Savings Plans Merger With Imperial Corporation

Lawrence Grossman announced at the Lompoc Savings and Loan annual meeting that Lompoc will merge with Imperial Corporation of America. Stockholders receive 240,000 Imperial shares valued at about 3.86 million dollars, or six Imperial shares per Lompoc share, with an estimated 96.75 dollars per Lompoc share. The deal awaits stockholder and regulator approvals. completion is expected next summer.

Arraignment underway for McKay murder case in Lompoc

Murder suspect Daniel Glen McKay, 29, faces two counts of murder in the deaths of Mildred Greco, 39, and Galen Dill, 38. Judge Terrill Cox delayed ruling on bail as the case may go to a grand jury, with a preliminary hearing date to be set. If indicted, case would go to Santa Maria Superior Court.
