Major brush fires surge in Los Angeles winds

A wave of fires swept the northeastern Los Angeles basin as gale force winds fanned burning brush. About 20 fires erupted. 110 fire units operated, two major emergencies were declared, and three homes on Glendower Street were damaged with estimated losses of 40 thousand dollars. A saboteur crawled under a barbed wire fence to trigger two blasts at the Stanford Lineau Accelerator control center. Deputies and the FBI searched $100,000 wreckage at the remote trigger end. no injuries were reported. The two mile long accelerator, the world’s most powerful straightline device, was closed for maintenance.
