Podgorny to Visit Hanoi for Friendship Mission

Leopold dead at 66 in Puerto Rico

Navy pilots new bucket throwing skimmers in oil slick cleanup

A crane operated bucket throwing ship joined the floating vacuum cleaner to skim a 60 mile oil slick along Southern California shores. The navy reported five oil patches and 160 sailors and Marines were cleaning 25 miles of beaches from Carlsbad to Ocean Beach with 20 miles fouled at Camp Pendleton. The spill traced to a refueling error on an aircraft carrier.

Strike talks reopen as unions and PMA bargain on arming cargo

Negotiators for the striking Longshoremen and Pacific Maritime Association return to the table as peace talks resume after a week. Teamsters President Frank Fitzsimmons offered to accept binding arbitration on container cargo handling after meeting with Harry Bridges. Bridges gave no public comment but may speak today.
