Sadat says Jordan receives large US weapon shipments
Egyptian President Anwar Sadat told the Arab Socialist Union central committee that Jordan has been receiving large quantities of American weapons including heavy tanks. He linked the shipments to Jordan's attack on Syria and warned the arms exceed what could be used against Palestinians, not Israel, under U.S. security terms. He also noted a strike at the Helwan iron and steel complex with workers detained.

County considers 59 cent county tax levy increase
The County Board of Supervisors discussed authorizing a 59 cent county tax levy increase for the 1971-72 fiscal year. The hike would raise the levy outside the five incorporated cities from 3.01 to 3.60 per 100 of assessed valuation and include an 11 cent allocation for capital improvements, with total local property tax rises and budget expenditures reaching new highs. The auditor A. T. Eaves Jr. cited additional revenues from government grants and noted one city levy remains unsettled in Lompoc.

Northern Ireland faced its deadliest weekend since internment began as a British patrol crossed 400 yards into the Irish Republic near Crossmaglen. Col Ian Armstrong was killed and another trooper wounded as six IRA gunmen opened fire while the patrol tried to reassess a flat tire. A Foreign Office spokesman said Ambassador John Peck would seek a full border report and assurances the attackers would be brought to justice. Lt Col Michael Palmer, who witnessed the incident, said the patrol driver made a fatal mistake and the unit later returned to Northern Ireland.
