Dust hazards spurred change at J M diatomite plants in 1952

The 1952 shift followed a surge of publicity on diatomite dust and pneumoconiosis. Reports in Search and the San Francisco Chronicle prompted investigations, union strikes, and new dust control measures at Johns Manville and related Lompoc operations, with work conditions described as unbelievable and health concerns rising among local residents and workers.

Lompoc land split approved with water condition

The County Planning Commission approved a 38 acre land division east of Lompoc on two parcels 10 and 28 acres but only if domestic water is supplied by an approved system. Health Dept spokesman Greg Clark said an existing unlegalized well serves the area and until a permitted system is in place the split should not be recorded and the case has gone to the district attorney.

County approves four parcel split for oil service area east of Santa Maria

The County Planning Commission approved a 30.3 acre four parcel division east of Santa Maria, enabling an oil service area for north county petroleum activity. Coast Vacuum Truck Service Inc. owns the land with two producing wells and 2 percent easements to oil firms. Parcels range 6.41 to 9.3 acres. Names Thomas B. Adam II Frederick O. Sherrill Jr Elizabeth Newark Ann S. Newark were listed as associates.

Hamburger King Kroc wins canyon lot split

Multi millionaire Ray Kroc owner of McDonald’s and the San Diego Padres won a 4-3 vote by the County Planning Commission to split a 2 acre homesite from his 208 acre Happy Canyon Ranch in Santa Ynez Valley. The remainder goes to the Kroc Foundation.
