Nightclub blast rocks Chattanooga killing one

A massive explosion in a predominantly Black area of Chattanooga, Tennessee, killed one man and injured at least 13, with $10 million in damage. Debris covered Ninth Street. a body was found in the rubble as authorities considered causes beyond a gas leak. Two children remained missing.

Firefighters gain hand in arson blaze with night drops

In Hemet firefighters used Vietnam War era binocular eyeglasses to guide infrared night water drops on a spreading brush fire. The blaze burned 17,500 acres with a 34 mile perimeter and 2,200 firefighters worked in 12 hour shifts as containment neared 60 percent by dawn.

Temperatures little changed with highs in the 60s near the coast and 70s inland, and lows tonight in the 50s. Northwest winds 10 to 20 mph in the afternoon. Friday tides show high tides of 4.3 ft at 10:13 am and 5.5 ft at 9:34 pm, low tides 0.1 ft at 3:54 am and 1.7 ft at 3:35 pm.

Navy reserve aviators rescued after 53 days at sea

Two Navy reserve pilots George Sigler age 29 and Charles Gore age 27 from Alameda California were rescued 120 miles from their Pacific crossing destination. They spent 53 days afloat in a rubber liferaft before a Coast Guard helicopter retrieved them and their 16 foot craft near Honolulu Hawaii.

Lompoc city, member of the Northern California Power Agency, lost a five month suspension request on PG and E rate increases. New wholesale power rates took effect August 24.
