Tomato growers accuse canners of imposing quotas

Robert Holt of the California Tomato Growers Association testified at a market order hearing that some canners are starting to refuse tomatoes and set delivery quotas. He said harvest is about one third complete and that quotas could continue through November, forcing growers to haul and process only part of their crop and incurring extra costs. He urged a marketing order to allow full marketing of production free from restrictive contracts.

Army drops charges against boy soldier

A 15-year old Army staff sergeant who became a soldier at 12 had defrauding the federal government charges dropped by U.S. Commissioner Darrell Thomas at Ft. Carson Colorado. The Justice Department dismissed the complaint and Martin was released after FBI arrest. He was flown from Denver to Chicago for further travel to Atlanta according to one report.
