Washington reports the Pentagon announced a first time interception of a Minuteman missile by the Safeguard ABM system. A Spartan interceptor launched from Kwajalein Atoll intercepted the Minuteman outside the atmosphere, with no warheads on both missiles.
In Wilmington and East Los Angeles violence erupts as crowds of 400 to 500 clash with police. Tear gas drives back protesters. 17 arrests and over 1 million in property damage reported. Ruben Salazar killed during bar confrontation amid the National Chicano Moratorium parade aftermath.
The Supreme Court announced an October 12 hearing on whether the Constitution requires racial balance in schools by busing and other measures. Six cases from Charlotte, Mobile, and Clarke County will be consolidated. The Charlotte Mecklenburg desegregation case features Judge McMillan’s order to bus 9,300 more students amid a system of 44,000 elementary pupils already bused. The Nixon administration argues the court has only ruled against dual school systems.
Amboinese students who seized the Indonesian embassy surrendered tonight after negotiations with Dutch Premier Piet de Jong. They had threatened to execute the ambassador’s wife and two children if President Suharto did not meet them within 48 hours. Suharto postponed a state visit to The Hague.
President Nixon said he would not speculate on U S troops forming a peacekeeping force in the Middle East. He urged that external suggestions could hinder UN talks among Israel, Jordan and Egypt and noted cautious hope from the cease-fire while stressing uncertainty in Vietnam negotiations.
Congressman Charles M. Teague and State Assemblyman Don MacGillivray plan to attend the opening of the Valley Republicans campaign headquarters at 111.S.H St at 10 a.m. The GOP event coincides with a Democratic headquarters opening at 107 W. Ocean Ave as both parties press reelection campaigns.
Lompoc City Council to consider a resolution amending personnel rules to add a community development director while keeping the planning director post on file. Mayor opposed. planning director vacancy noted. salary proposed at 1110 to 1220 a month and duties defined including advisory role to the planning commission.
Whites picketed and boycotted in Stockbridge Georgia while many southern schools opened peacefully in fully integrated fashion. The Supreme Court set a hearing date on racial balance in public schools. A Miami man fired at a newly integrated school wounding a Cuban father. police report no racial motive. A Fort Lauderdale bomb threat at a desegregated school prompted pre dawn checks with no explosives found. In Mississippi two districts expect some white students back, Indianola reports over 170 white registrations in a system previously 2,615 Black students. Tunica officials expect some whites to rejoin a system previously 2,800 students under white majority absence.
Lonnie McLucas was found guilty of murder conspiracy in the 1969 torture death of Alex Rackley. The verdict came after 37 hours of jury deliberation. he faces up to 15 years, while acquitting him on kidnapping conspiracy and binding with intent charges. He is the first Panther tried in Rackley’s death.
