High Court Sets Oct 12 For Busing Decision

The Supreme Court announced an October 12 hearing on whether the Constitution requires racial balance in schools by busing and other measures. Six cases from Charlotte, Mobile, and Clarke County will be consolidated. The Charlotte Mecklenburg desegregation case features Judge McMillan’s order to bus 9,300 more students amid a system of 44,000 elementary pupils already bused. The Nixon administration argues the court has only ruled against dual school systems.

Amboinese youths surrender after embassy siege in The Hague

Nixon declines to comment on U S troops in Middle East peace

President Nixon said he would not speculate on U S troops forming a peacekeeping force in the Middle East. He urged that external suggestions could hinder UN talks among Israel, Jordan and Egypt and noted cautious hope from the cease-fire while stressing uncertainty in Vietnam negotiations.

The Supreme Court set a hearing date on racial balance in public schools. A Miami man fired at a newly integrated school wounding a Cuban father. police report no racial motive. A Fort Lauderdale bomb threat at a desegregated school prompted pre dawn checks with no explosives found. In Mississippi two districts expect some white students back, Indianola reports over 170 white registrations in a system previously 2,615 Black students. Tunica officials expect some whites to rejoin a system previously 2,800 students under white majority absence.

Black Panther Lonnie Mc Lucas Convicted in Rackley Slaying

Lonnie McLucas was found guilty of murder conspiracy in the 1969 torture death of Alex Rackley. The verdict came after 37 hours of jury deliberation. he faces up to 15 years, while acquitting him on kidnapping conspiracy and binding with intent charges. He is the first Panther tried in Rackley’s death.
