County Auditor Paul E. Floyd urged the Board of Supervisors to set the FY 1973 74 tax levy at 2.5693 or 2.6404 per 100 of assessed value depending on a tax litigation reserve. The current rate is 3.46, down from 3.60 in 1971 72, helped by a 7 million federal revenue sharing program and a record 5.4 million fund balance.
The California Public Utilities Commission will hold a public hearing at Cabrillo High School Little Theater on the Vandenberg Utilities Co. rate increase. A 60 percent rise is proposed in two steps with an initial 33 percent hike for 1,500 customers and a further 27 percent after a filtration plant is installed. The current average monthly bill is about $10 per home.
Martha Mitchell reports her husband John Mitchell is deeply distraught over Watergate and the scandal. She says they still live together but seldom speak, and that Nixon cut him off while his law firm suffers. Trial set for Sept. 11 in New York.

A 35 year old Nipomo woman identified as Piccoloa Chloe Kurtz was found dead inside her car which plunged from Highway 1 into a 30 foot ravine five miles south of Lompoc. Deputies reported the body discovered by Bill Murray near skid marks on the highway.
A Lockheed Electra turboprop operated by Aerocondor with 43 aboard crashed in dense fog east of Bogota near Monserrate. Initial reports indicate no survivors as investigators note the aircraft failed to maneuver left after takeoff from El Dorado Airport.
Swedish police halted a plan to release knockout gas into a bank vault where gunman Jan Erik Olsson and convict Clark Olofsson held four hostages. The hostages begged for their lives, and the drama became a pivotal political issue ahead of September elections.
