Lompoc Enacts Ordinance Reworking City Commissions

City of Lompoc adopts Ordinance No 944(74) amending sections on Parks and Recreation, Planning, Water, and Beautification Commissions. It sets five member commissions, three year terms for parks, four year terms for planning, and outlines selection, vacancies, and rules. The measure also continues Beautification Commission members and clarifies environmental and personnel board provisions. The ordinance takes effect 12:01 am on the 31st day after adoption, August 20, 1974.

Guinea independence ceremony set today

Portuguese officials and guerrilla leaders gathered in Algeria to sign an accord granting independence to Guinea. Butane explosion shatters windows in Petal Mississippi

A predawn butane gas well blast in Petal near Hattiesburg sent flames over 1000 feet high and shattered windows miles away. Twenty two people were treated for minor injuries, four admitted. Residents were evacuated as six hours to seal leaks. Cause unclear, near a valve as gas stored underground.

Unpaid bill fuels fatal Moline apartment fire

In Moline Illinois a 16 month old girl Barbara Crippen died from a weekend fire caused by a lantern refilling accident after the family had been without electricity since August 7. Her mother Sharon Crippen 22 was burned and hospitalized. father James Crippen attempted to light using a white gas lantern and a candle.

Mutsu Nuclear Ship Breaks Blockade in Northern Japan

Japan's first nuclear powered ship the Mutsu left Mutsu port in Aomori Prefecture 375 miles north of Tokyo after a day long blockade by antinuclear fishermen. Escorted by 16 patrol boats the 8 214 ton vessel headed into the Tsugaru Strait on a test cruise as about 800 riot police guarded the port. The departure was delayed as 260 fishing boats ringed the vessel three deep and tied together until patrol boats dispersed them.
