Company turns garbage into fuel in California

UPI reports Sira International Inc a Sunyvale Los Gatos California firm claims a process to convert garbage and solid waste into pellet sized fuel. President Ian Allison says the fuel could extend coal reserves and reduce disposal problems while costing 3 to 5 dollars per ton versus 13 to 18 for coal and conserves 69 million tons of coal annually.

Guards vow against Moretti bid over death penalty bills

California prison guards threaten to campaign against Speaker Bob Moretti in the 1974 Democratic gubernatorial race if the Assembly committee kills capital punishment bills. Ken Brown of the California Correctional Officers Association accuses Moretti of stacking the deck against passage. The Criminal Justice Committee, led by Moretti allies, plans a key vote on death penalty legislation with slim chances of approval.

Lightning Sets Off Dozens Of Forest Fires Across West

UPI reports firefighters in Idaho and Montana battled nearly 100 small fires sparked by lightning while two large blazes in California were halted. Forest Rangers at Boise say seven major fires remained out of control, having burned about 70 000 acres.

Goldwater rescues couple in harbor during boat accident

Senator Barry Goldwater dove into Newport harbor to rescue a North Hollywood couple tossed from their speedboat as it struck a wave. The Machlitts, in their early 40s, were brought to the Coast Guard dock and treated for minor injuries. The incident surfaced after Newport Beach police logs noted a rescue by Senator Goldwater.
