Sister seeks to coax brother from barricaded dorm at Edwards

The sister of Airman Earl Williams arrived at Edwards Air Force Base in California to urge the 19-year-old to surrender after he barricaded himself in a dorm for three days. He fired randomly from a second story window on Monday and Tuesday. About 100 enlisted men were moved from the barracks as authorities waited him out.

EPA proposes window labels showing gas mileage on 1974 cars

The EPA asked U.S. automakers to reveal fall mileage figures for new cars. Assistant administrator Robert L. Sansom said the voluntary plan aims to inform buyers about gasoline consumption and operating costs. If adopted, 1974 models on sale next month would display mileage estimates beside price stickers.

Police booked 35 year old William J. Elder of 320 N Sixth St on a warrant for tampering with electrical firing and conspiracy tied to an Aug 9 incident at the Pacific Gas and Electric Substation in Chestnut Ave and E Street. Bail set at 5000 dollars after his Lompoc Jail intake.

Isla Vista Planning OKs Large Lot Zoned Area Change

The Goleta County Planning Commission approved a general plan amendment for a large Isla Vista residential area by a 5 4 vote. It backs down zoning to match 10 R 1 D from 6 R 1 D. Nearby property owners and local groups supported the move west of UCSB. The 68 acre site lies between El Colegio Road Camino Corto and the coastline.

Butz predicts slower rise in 1974 food prices

Agriculture Secretary Earl L. Butz told reporters that American food prices would rise less than some forecasts and level off later this year. He projected a 5 percent or less increase for 1974, with prices rising again next year. Dunlop noted unknown factors like demand and weather.
