Battleship New Jersey Decommissioned Amid Budget Cuts

The battleship New Jersey, a World War II and Korean War veteran famed for firing on Vietnam targets, will be decommissioned as part of a 3 billion Pentagon cut. The ship costs 26 thousand dollars daily to operate with 79 officers and 1,556 sailors, despite a 22.2 million retrofit. The decision ends a controversial return to duty and may lead to mothballing or scrapping.

United States Expels Cuban Diplomat From U.N.

The State Department expelled third secretary Lazaro Espinosa Bonet of the Cuban mission to the United Nations for activities outside normal duties. He was accused of trying to recruit a Cuban refugee to spy on President Nixon. an assassination plot was not confirmed. Also barred were First Secretary Alberto Boza Hidalgo Gato and warned Second Secretary Jorge E Reyes Vaga. The FBI monitored ongoing abuses by the Cuban UN mission.

Lompoc Chamber Elects Woman to Board of Directors

The Lompoc Chamber of Commerce names Mrs. Cletus Lunny the first woman to join its Board of Directors and appoints her head of the Women’s Division. New and elected members include Francis Underwood and Gerry Schuknecht with an installation banquet set for Sept. 25 at the Elks Club. The board also addresses the need for more convalescent hospital facilities per the California Health Department.

Electronics links base and schools at Cabrillo program

A long running electronics program connects Vandenberg Air Force Base expertise with Cabrillo High School students. Dick Diddel, an ITT technician, began teaching part time in 1966 and now focuses on Cabrillo, after helping start the effort with equipment donations and federal funding.

Seven weathermen celebrate ten years at Vandenberg

Seven Department of Commerce Weather Bureau staff at Vandenberg AFB mark a decade of meteorological service at the California missile launch center. The group totals over 175 government years across 30 stations in 13 states and helped open the upper atmospheric observatory at Point Arguello in 1959.

Arrests After Violence Near St Francis Hotel Protest

A brief skirmish between police and antiwar militants outside the St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco led to eight arrests. Mounted officers cleared a 50 person line on Post Street as demonstrators damaged cars and clashed briefly, while most of the 4,000 strong crowd watched. The event occurred during a state dinner for South Korea’s Park Chung-Hee hosted by President Nixon.

Local groups schedule rummage and food sales on August 23 at Grange Hall and O Neill s Market, plus a car wash at two Shell stations.
