Tax credit loss hurts Market in inflation debate

Stocks closed lower after President Nixon proposed eliminating the 7 percent investment tax credit to curb inflation. Monsanto urged retention for modernization and competitiveness, while Armco Steel and others warned of negative economic impact. Market indicators fell with 811 decliners, 750 advancers, and new lows at 363. The Dow-like indicator dropped 0.99 percent to 123.65. the NYSE average rose 28 cents to 56.84. the S and P 500 gained 0.48 to 101.72.

Arraignment in Lompoc on assault with deadly weapon

James Tony Scalise 50 of Santa Barbara was arraigned in Lompoc Justice Court on assault with a deadly weapon linked to a shooting that injured a Lompoc man. Richard Smith 40 received hospital care after the incident near Ocean Avenue and Street. Both men are deaf mutes. Scalise faces a preliminary hearing set for May 14 after initial bond on the original attempted murder charge.

Suspect Held in Haight Ashbury Drug Execution

Police take Robert M. Jahmelik into custody on suspicion of murder after he admitted seeing two victims use drugs before they were shot in a Hayes Street apartment. The three victims Cindy Marie Taylor 19 Daly City William Oswald 24 Concord and Margaret Fochtman 18 Cleveland were found kneeling and executed amid a drug scene.

Fong bill to outlaw pay toilets fails in committee

In Sacramento Assemblywoman March Fong led a protest against pay toilets, smashing a toilet with a sledgehammer as her bill to outlaw them stalled. The all male committee lacked a quorum and the chair declared the measure dead. supporters marched with placards while the Dixieland band played.

Plea for new Sirhan trial delayed for week

Sirhan B. Sirhan, condemned to death for Kennedy slaying, won a one week delay in the hearing on his request for a new trial. Judge Herbert Walker granted May 21 after defense attorney Grant Cooper cited his calendar conflict. Cooper to file a written brief. ruling could affect potential life sentence.

A Minuteman 0 ICBM was launched from Van denberg AFB at 10 a.m. by a missile combat crew of the 321st Strategic Missile Wing based at Grand Forks. Officials termed the launch a training exercise.
