Leftist students in Tokyo clashed with riot police in the glittering shopping district. They demanded the U.S. return of Okina wa using concrete chunks wooden staves steel pipes baseball bats and Molotov cocktails as police fought back with clubs.
Peking Radio quoted Lin Piao declaring China prepared for a full scale war and even a nuclear exchange with the United States and the Soviet Union. The report from the ninth Congress stressed readiness for long term war and continued support for Vietnam while condemning U.S. imperialism and Soviet revisionism.
Paris reports panic buying as Charles de Gaulle resigns ending 11 years of autocratic rule. Franc falls to record lows, gold hits a peak near 49.09 dollars per ounce, and prices surge as French citizens rush to unload francs amid devaluation fears.
Three people were injured in three separate weekend accidents. Ernest William Russell Jr. 17 of Los Alamos fractured his left thigh when his car veered off Lompoc Casmalia Road and burned. Eleanor June Ahern 30 of Buellton suffered neck injuries and contusions on Highway 246 after a rollover. James Eugene Turri 35 of Lompoc had chest bruises when his car collided with Michael Ralph McRoberts 21 on West Ocean Avenue. All were treated at Lompoc Hospital.

The seven segment solid fueled rocket produced 1.42 million pounds thrust with a possible hydraulic valve fire noted at 102 seconds but not affecting booster effectiveness.
The Defense Department reports 21 of 29 ships in the Korean area naval task force were detached. Only the nuclear powered carrier Enterprise and seven destroyers remain, now operating in the Yellow Sea East China Sea area instead of the Sea of Japan where a U S reconnaissance plane with 31 crew was shot down on April 14.
Egypt charges Israel with opening tank and small arms fire along the entire 103 mile Suez Canal and reports a high degree of danger to UN observers. Israeli forces clash with Jordanian troops in the Jordan River Valley, while Arab commandos near the Syrian border reportedly wreck a bus killing one Israeli and wounding several others.
