Lakers aim to clinch NBA West title against Warriors

Lakers lead 3-0 in the best of seven and can reach the NBA finals with a win in Oakland. Jim McMillian scored 28 as Nate Thurmond and Keith Erickson suffered injuries. Wilt Chamberlain anchored the defense with rebounds and blocks but his teammates’ injuries cloud the night.

Knicks Rally to Victory in Double OT Showdown

New York Knicks overturned a 16 point deficit in the fourth quarter with Walt Frazier directing a late rally. Frazier played aggressively in the final period and led the team to a 117-110 win over the Boston Celtics in overtime, moving ahead 31 in the NBA semifinal series.

UCLA coach John Wooden said he made no commitments about his future beyond the current season and plans to leave UCLA with a strong program in place. Washington, a 17 year old 6-9 prospect from Portland, signed a national letter of intent to enroll at UCLA and could play as a freshman.

Benje Williams wins 105 lb title at San Francisco Invitational

Benje Williams of Vandenberg-Lompoc wins the 105 pound Seniors division at the San Francisco National Invitational Wrestling Tournament. He acids seven straight victories, pins in three early matches, and defeats the New Mexico state champ, the Oregon runner up, and Joe Young, to claim the title. The Cabrillo High student was named CIF SL 105-pound champion and called the event his toughest of the year. Charles Clees and Stuart Radford also placed in junior brackets, with the team preparing for the El Dorado Southern Section Freestyle Championships next weekend.

West Germans Lead Mt San Antonio Relays Entry List

A 30 man West German contingent tops the entries for the Mt. San Antonio Relays, with notable athletes Sepp Schwartz holder of the European record 27.434 in long jump and Gunther Nickel who ran 13.6 in the 110 meter high hurdles last year, ranking fifth in the world.
