Secret fund controlled for spying during Nixon campaign

Washington Star News reports Herbert W. Kalmbach controlled a secret Newport Beach bank account funded by cashier's checks and cash, used for political spying and disruption including payments to Donald Segretti. The fund, possibly $200,000 to $500,000, was closed before the Watergate break in. White House aides face resignations as Watergate probes widen.

Weather remains fair through Tuesday with local low clouds near the coast this morning and increasing late tonight. Cooler today with highs in the 60s near the coast and up to 70s inland. highs Tuesday similar. Northwest winds 10 to 20 mph. Tuesday tides include high tides at 1:14 a.m. and 5:45 p.m. and low tides at 9:39 a.m. and 8:57 p.m.

School Board Reviews Election Results and Budget Items

The school board will review election results that bring Gail Steiger and Richard K. Jacoby onto the board. It will consider a district Personnel Commission budget of 22 210 dollars, a Knudsen Dairy bid presentation, Boyer salary for swimming coach, and an enrollment drop to 12 220. It will also discuss Title I federal aid applications for Fillmore and El Camino and Miller-Unruh reading program applications.

Ships reach Phnom Penh after perilous Mekong voyage

Two supply ships and six tankers carrying over two million gallons of fuel arrived in Phnom Penh after a six hour Mekong River passage from Tan Chau. One crewman was killed and another wounded by fire from river banks. a ship captain was injured.

Final absentee tabulation confirms Steiger and Jacoby for school board

County elections official Bob Kirkpatrick reported 22 additional absentee votes. Gail Steiger rose to 1,890, Richard K. Jacoby to 1,604, George Mills to 678, and Evan Brossman to 658. Outcome unchanged. school board review slated for tomorrow’s regular meeting.

Thunderstorms and tornadoes sweep across Mississippi valley

Powerful storms roamed the lower Mississippi Valley with lightning hail and several tornadoes. Heavy rains caused rivers to rise and flash flood watches to be issued from Arkansas to the Ohio Valley. A light plane crash near Austin Texas left six dead amid the storms. Tornadoes sighted near Little Rock Arkansas and Ballinger Texas caused no injuries or damages reported.

Supreme Court to rule on Congress members holding military reserve commissions

The Supreme Court agreed to hear arguments on whether members of Congress may hold commissions in the military reserves. Lower courts in DC ruled the practice unconstitutional, and the Defense Department appealed. The court plans a fall or winter session with a written opinion next term.

New gas crater spouts near Acme Michigan town

In Williamsburg Michigan a new natural gas crater emerged along South Lautner Road four miles west of Williamsburg and one mile east of Acme forcing ten more families to evacuate. State officials reported no fires or injuries while Amoco plans shallow relief drilling to reduce gas pressure.
