County schools set elections across 26 districts
All 26 county districts plan trustee elections on April 15, with contests in 18 districts for 66 board seats. A total of 120 candidates filed, including 41 incumbents. Three districts also vote on budget or tax increases: College School District Santa Ynez Valley, Orcutt Union School District, and Cuyama Joint Union School District.

County seeks federal halt to offshore oil drilling

County plans two agricultural preserve hearings in Buellton Los Alamos
The County Planning Commission will hold public hearings on April 9 in Santa Barbara on rezoning 2324 acres west of Highway 101 for an agricultural preserve by California Diamite and Asphalt Corp. and on 388 acres near Los Alamos by Joseph and Henry Contaglia. Youth wounded in accidental gun discharge in Lompoc
A 19 year old Lompoc youth, Marvin Ray Hartsfield, was shot in the right shoulder when a handgun thought to be unloaded discharged during a gathering after a hunting trip. Casarez and Henderson, both present, told police the incident was accidental and Hartsfield was treated at Lompoc Hospital. one shell remained in the chamber.
