Cloudy conditions persist in Lompoc and the central coast with rain likely tonight and showers Saturday. Temperatures reach the mid 50s with tonight lows in the upper 40s. Winds shift from southeast tonight to west Saturday at 12 to 30 mph, with Saturday high tides near 3.5 feet at 12 02 p.m. and low tides around minus 0.6 feet at 5 44 a.m. and 1.7 feet at 4 56 p.m.

Hayakawa Seen as Top Vote Getter in Private Poll

A private statewide poll cited by the San Francisco Chronicle shows Dr. S I Hayakawa as the Democrats best potential vote getter for 1970 contests. Reagan leads in the governor’s race while Hayakawa would beat Republicans Murphy and Rafferty and could defeat Alioto or Unruh in a Democratic primary. Hayakawa says he had nothing to do with the sampling.

Homeowners urged to file tax rebate and exemption forms

Lompoc Valley homeowners risk losing about 140 per person if they fail to file the 70 rebate and 1969 70 valuation exemption forms by April 15. County official Charles Brown cites common filing errors and notes Compucenters Inc will assist with an optical scanner to finish by May 15. The program aims to process thousands of claims and deliver state records for rebates and reductions.

Sugar Tank Car Goes on 10 Mile Compton Chase

A railroad tanker loaded with liquid sugar rolled from control at 50 mph on Southern Pacific tracks in Compton pursued by a switch engine. A police helicopter warned motorists at intersections as the tank car sped ahead. The switch engine caught the runaway after 10 miles and halted it with no damage or injuries.
