Barn-Raising At John Peters Farm Draws 103 Volunteers
An old-time barn-raising on John Peters' farm along the Fruitville pike attracted eighty workers to lift heavy timber from dawn to noon. Samuel Habecker and six carpenters led the project building a 42 by 72 foot balloon roof barn on a concrete foundation. A mid day dinner on the Peters property fed 103 people, with women serving a bountiful meal and silent prayers before eating. The timber came from Buckwalter woods and Kissell Hill area, and the project aimed for a lasting structure on the thirty acre farm.
