Holland's Long John and a Forty One Bell Church Tower
The Nieve Kerk in Middleburg, nicknamed Long John or Lang Jan, sits atop a 280 foot tower with forty one bells that toll every seven and a half minutes. From the tower one sees Walcheren’s north and west coasts and sometimes Antwerp spires. Below lies Middleburg’s red roofs and market place beside the 16th century town hall with twenty five statues of Holland's counts and countesses. The town hall tower also chimes and echoes the hour as Long John marks standard time, while Betsy in the town hall responds with a raucous counterpoint.
