At a Tri-State Hospital Assembly meeting Gene Powers of the YMCA hotel department cited a 1856 Carson Pirie Scott handbook note. It claimed employees who smoke cigars shave at the barber or attend dances invite employer suspicion and required church dues and Sunday school attendance. It also stated men receive courting time and after long shifts reading as leisure.
