Military Training Bill Is Dismissed by Congress

House and senate leaders said Congress would unlikely act this year on the 1.75 billion annual universal military training plan. At best, committee hearings might occur before adjournment, then the measure would be shelved until the next session. The presidential commission warned current forces are a hollow shell and urged universal training as essential.

A six month compulsory basic training proposal for males aged 18 to 20 is outlined by a presidential commission headed by Karl Compton. The White House released the 448 page report, urging congressional action while noting economic impact and the need for nationwide preparedness amid evolving atomic threats.

Portrait painter claims clairvoyant likenesses from beyond

A former newspaperman named Lear describes a midcentury practicing gift creating portraits of the dead on demand. He says subjects appear spontaneously for the painting after families request it and verifies accuracy by photographs and calipers. He recalls painting a blameless ghost during an air raid and later confirming a daughter’s father.
