Everett Shields of Highland township was appointed to the Greene County Alcoholic Beverage Board for one year, replacing Wesley Roberts of Owensburg. His term began June 1 as commissioners held routine business in Bloomfield. The board paid claims from county departments.

Thirty of the more than 470 holiday deaths occurred in Indiana. Eighteen were due to traffic accidents, with one fatality at the Indianapolis Memorial Day 500 mile race, five drownings, and six miscellaneous deaths. No fatal airplane crashes were reported in Indiana. State police noted fewer small plane crashes as air traffic violators are now treated like highway violations.
A gas furnace explosion at the Teen Canteen caused several hundred dollars in damage. Firefighters say smoldering since 6 30 am Saturday until 1 pm, with interior damage due to smoke. Funeral services for Mary E Roth 77 a Worthington resident who died Saturday at Terre Haute were conducted at Myers Funeral Home with Rev Theron Castleman officiating. Burial was in Worthington Cemetery. She was born Aug 22 1869 in Owen County daughter of Eben and Louisa Heaton. Survived by one sister Mrs Josephine Nelson and several nieces and nephews. A son Charles Roth died in 1918 serving in the U S Army.
Linton Eagles blasted Little Betty 13 to 2 at Betty diamond. Five runs in the first inning set the tone, aided by four hits and two errors, with three more runs in the eighth and sixth inning. Laughlin allowed seven hits while the Eagles collected ten with one error to Bettys four. Sunday’s game with Worthington was rained out for the third straight week.
Mr and Mrs Leonard Fish and their six year old son David Lee of Bedford escaped serious injury when a Studebaker truck owned by Ewing Milling Co of Bedford overturned on state road 54 a half mile east of Bloomfield. The Fishes were en route to visit the Roude bush family in Bloomfield when the crash occurred.
Mrs. Harriett Pease of Tol land plans to sell her Tol land house to raise 500 dollars for the return of her 16 year old Pekingese Cheerio. The pet has been with her family long time.
Weekend hospital activity includes admissions for Esta Alen and Charles DeCourcy in Linton, Ruby Mae White for tonsillectomy in Lyons, and Mary Swaby, Helen Benham, Mildred Watson, Dora Franklin, and Mary Smith linked to births or medical care. Elmer Bedwell and Asa Walters were killed in a Baker mine fall near Sullivan route three. Injured are Harry Bedwell and Garwood Moore, treated at Mary Sherman hospital. Walters funeral set for Tuesday at Longs Chapel Church with burial at Longs Chapel cemetery. Bedwell funeral held at nearby Baptist church.
The Ladies Fancy Work Circle announced the Wednesday picnic will be postponed for two weeks.
Marion Rollison aged 81 retired farmer died at 11 p m Sunday night at his son Roy Rollison s home near Lincoln church northeast of Linton after three years of illness Funeral services are pending Myers Funeral Home Worthington handling arrangements survived by nine children, two daughters, one brother Taddeus of DeWitt Arkansas and 13 grandchildren the body to Worthington for burial
A two car collision at Tibbe avenue and state road 67 in Indianapolis injured seven Jasonville residents and seven Bridgeport residents. Nellie Brady suffered serious head injuries and is treated at Indianapolis City Hospital. The Brady and Markle families, plus Barkley Acton and his wife Mary, with their children, sustained a mix of serious and minor injuries.
The W S C S of the Methodist church will meet at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon in the home of Mrs. Lillian R Powell at 289 B Street Northeast. All ladies of the church are invited to attend.
A cloudburst dropped 3.20 inches on Greene County Sunday delaying spring planting for 10 to 14 days. White River surged to 20 feet at Bloomfield with forecast crest near 23 feet by Wednesday evening. Flooding hit Linton and surrounding areas with basements and ditches filled, roads closing between Bloomfield Scotland and Worthington. Farmers face harvest uncertainties due to persistent rain.
Five marriage licenses were issued in Greene circuit court at Bloomfield. A divorce suit was filed, and a State case on rape, State of Indiana vs Donald Shake of Jasonville, was heard with Shake released on recognizance. A public drain repair case was continued to June 17.
Francis Wagner, 23, attempted self harm in Goshen Indiana. Police found him with throat and wrist slashes and a farewell letter addressed to Mrs. Wagner. The return address read Francis Wagner in care of Hell.
Funeral services for Marion E. Hoops age 39 of Fort Wayne will be held Tuesday at 2 pm at Welch and Cornett Funeral Home. Rev. R B Baldridge will officiate and burial follows in Fairview Cemetery.
Mrs. Sarah Iva Deckard, 59, of southwest of Dugger, was killed when two autos collided on state road 54 near Exline. Eight others injured, including Floyd Deckard who fractured his hip and granddaughter Aleda Deckard with a knee fracture. Funeral services planned at Hickory Methodist Church.
Funeral services for Mrs Ellen Boone 64 who died Friday at her home near the Hickory church west of Dugger were conducted at the church with Rev Paul Lewis and Rev C E Homberger officiating. Burial followed in Hickory cemetery. Survivors include two sons Jesse and Hosea Boone of Sullivan rural route one daughter Ada Creager of Sullivan rural route four sisters Ada Mayberry Emma Surfiea Effie Furlough Ollie Cassidy of Illinois five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Newkirk Funeral home of Pleasantville had charge.
Weather delays force postponement of Ladies' Day at the Golf and Country Club. The event, originally set for tomorrow, will be held next Tuesday, June 10, announced by the committee chairman.
Rescue workers searched wrecked communities in Arkansas and Oklahoma after a tornado and high winds killed at least 37 people and injured about 200. The path four miles wide and twenty miles long struck Union near Pine Bluff Arkansas and Leedey Oklahoma, leveling homes and businesses and trapping victims. fatalities included multiple families.
