Answers To School Tax Problems In Le Mars Merrill District
County Auditor L A Ludwig said state laws preempt tax load issues for the new Le Mars Merrill school district. Agricultural land tax credits apply automatically when 15 acres or more and mil levy exceeds 13 mills, with the state fund covering excess agricultural tax claims. Taxes are collected a year after due. 1958 taxes paid now, 1959 due next year, with agricultural credits paid in 1960. Levy details to be set by the yet to be elected school board. township assessments will follow district boundaries for tax levies despite irregular shapes.

Reorganization aims to boost school funding via tax base
The discussion notes that if a township spans multiple school districts the mill levy will follow each district, based on taxable property valuation recorded at the courthouse. The reorganization plan seeks to bring more property into the tax base so school funds can be raised without overburdening current property owners. Also reported, the annual sisters reception at St James church featured new dining room chairs, a potluck supper, and card games.
