Queen Elizabeth 2 uses satellites for precise navigation
On its maiden crossing to New York the Queen Elizabeth 2 relies on four U.S. Navy satellites to fix position within 100 feet, replacing dead reckoning. A mini computer in the chart room processes signals from the foremast antennae while radar monitors 24 mile ahead hazards. The 58 000 ton liner cruises at 28 knots with 1 400 passengers and eight dogs, due in New York Wednesday afternoon.
