Fortas connected grand jury probe centers on firm documents

A federal grand jury in Cleveland investigates documents found in a safe at Arnold & Porter tied to a jewelry theft. The probe, begun by the Justice Department, may implicate former law firm links to Abe Fortas though he had left the firm years earlier. Fortas’s wife Carolyn Agger is a partner there. A separate case involves Irwin Fruchtman, a Toledo steel executive, who was later sentenced for obstructing justice.

Budget Okayed For Extension Service Office

Douglas County Commission approved the 1970 budget for the Agricultural Extension Service at 65382 dollars with the county share 48141. A planned hire of an horticulturalist at 8500 was removed. The service runs 4-H programs and fairgrounds operations, with state funds and carryover covering the rest.

KU Receives 53000 Gift in Memory of Mary Morrill Litchfield

Kansas University Chancellor W Clark Wescoe announced a memorial gift of more than 53000 to the KU Program for Progress in memory of Mary Morrill Litchfield a 1946 KU graduate. The Morrill family of Topeka Munster and Topeka trustees contributed. Mary Morrill was editor of the Jayhawker and University Daily Kansan and earned Phi Beta Kappa. The program aims to raise 186 million in private support for the university.

West German Mark Strength Persists in European Markets

Western currencies including the dollar fell on European trading as markets anticipated an early rise in the West German mark. The Bundesbank moved to ease currency flows by eliminating swaps charges after a $106 million one hour surge and flagged a possible unilateral mark appreciation. In Frankfurt the dollar traded around 3.97 marks and the pound stayed near its floor as forwards dropped sharply.

Judge Gray Disqualifies Self From Mumford Case

Douglas County District Court Judge Frank Gray disqualifies himself from ruling on Danny Mumford's modification of sentence for assault and asks the State Supreme Court to appoint a pro tem judge. Mumford, 19, of 429 Ind. St., is at Hutchinson in a 1 to 3 year term for assault on a Lawrence police officer. An April 28 acid and rock attack damaged Gray's home at 718 W. 4th St. with significant glass breakage.
