Israel Expects Soviet Contact to Resume Ties

Abba Eban said Israel expects the Soviet Union to initiate steps to resume diplomatic contacts halted since the 1967 war. He spoke in Jerusalem to American Jewish leaders, noting Moscow’s need for understanding with Israel. Romania remains the only Soviet bloc country not to break ties. Meanwhile Lebanon's Saeb Salam began a three day visit to Jordan, with talk of mediation between King Hussein and Palestinian guerrillas. In Cairo talks, Sadat and King Faisal discussed a unified Middle East stance, while Egypt moved to seize assets of several former officials tied to plots against Sadat. Gaza reports noted another Arab woman murdered and drivers’ strikes as 50 killings in the Strip this year raise fears of collaboration with Israelis.
