City Update on Lawrence Street Study and Bypass Plan

Lawrence city officials are updating the transportation plan to guide streets and highways for the coming years. They met state highway officials including R L Peyton to press for a south bypass from the new K 10 freeway to Clinton Lake and for shifting U S Highway 59 east of Iowa Street toward Sixth Street to the Kansas River Bridge.

Golfing Newlyweds Tie Knot then Play 18 Holes

Lor raine O'Keefe and Charles Tolbert married Monday on the ninth green at Mayfair Country Club in Sanford Florida. After the ceremony they joined separate foursomes to play 18 holes, saying they love golf and the outdoors and this club.

McLouth Board Approves School Breakfast Plan

The Unified School District 342 board authorized a federally funded school breakfast program for all students with a small student fee and a 15 cent state reimbursement per meal. They also approved a bus purchase, gym remodeling estimates, use of the grade school by a church, and hired Elizabeth Blue as a vocational home economics teacher.

Lawrence Charity Horse Show Draws Entries From Far Afield

Entries for the 27th annual Lawrence Charity Horse Show come from Texas Indiana Oklahoma and Nebraska with about 350 entries submitted by a secretary treasurer. The show runs Thursday to Saturday at the county fairgrounds and features Arabians Appaloosas American saddlebreds Tennessee walking horses and palominos in diverse classes. A mule drawn wagon will headline the Friday half time show and proceeds go to the Fraternal Order of Police with home cooked food at the concession stand.

Lawrence woman nets 19-pound channel catfish on Route 2 farm

Mary Dennis of Route 2 Lawrence caught a 19 pound channel catfish in a pond on her family farm owned by KU engineering professor George Swift. She used worms for bait and a 20 pound mono line with an ordinary reel. Fishing at Perry Reservoir improves as water quality and recreational use rise. Population center plaque stolen on Illinois farmland

Farmer Lawrence B Friederich of Mascoutah reports the theft of a sign designating his land as the U S population center. He planned to install a flag at the site when the sign disappeared, saying the loss is about principle rather than money and that he may be held responsible.

Nixon seeks AMA backing to counter Kennedy health plan

President Nixon urged the American Medical Association at their Atlantic City convention to back his health insurance proposal while warning that Kennedy's plan would cost 77 billion dollars annually in three years. He criticized federal control and stressed employer employee cost sharing with federal support for low income families. The AMA remained cool to national health insurance.

Garnett appoints Dennis Mitchell as city manager

Dennis Mitchell named city manager of Garnett Kansas effective July 12. Mitchell a 20 year assistant executive director of the League of Kansas Municipalities is a Hutchinson native who has worked on staffs in Fort Worth Texas and Hutchinson.

Lawrence KU promotional display unveiled at Turnpike rest area

The Lawrence Chamber of Commerce plans a three sided display at the Howard Johnson Restaurant in the Kansas Turnpike service area to publicize Lawrence and KU. Gerald Pearson and the convention and tourism committee will install the exhibit Wednesday morning with photos and text highlighting local museums and KU walking tours to attract travelers. Ed Julian of KU assisted in setup and officials expect strong interest from passers by.

Supreme Court tightens searches hindering wiretap plans

In a 5-4 ruling Justice Stewart limited warrantless searches, weakening government wiretap arguments. He ordered a new trial for Edward Coolidge Jr. in the Pamela Mason slaying, saying police needed a neutral magistrate's consent to search the suspect's car. The decision limits national security exemptions to Fourth Amendment protections.

Jail Trusty Not Trusted After Arrest

Charles E. Girton 23 of Madison Wisconsin was recaptured after leaving the Douglas County Jail last Tuesday night. A deputy sheriff stopped a car four miles east of Lawrence at 6 am and arrested Girton. He had previously pleaded guilty to jailbreak and joyriding and had been made a trusty to assist with jail work. He pleaded guilty to taking a car owned by James E Gunn after escaping custody.
