Slot Machines Taken in Raid in Iola Club

State officers led by Attorney General Vern Miller and Kansas Bureau of Investigation director Fred Howard raided the American Legion Club in Iola seizing five slot machines and two gambling tables. No arrests were made and warrants would be drawn Monday. The devices were Miller’s first since taking office in January. The club lies on U.S. 169 on the town's west side.

Fire at Barn Destroys Structure in Local District

Firefighters responded to a blaze at a barn owned by Lawrence Construction Company on 27th and Oregon. The building suffered a $1000 loss and $200 for contents. cause undetermined. Additional Friday runs included a brush fire at 27th and Redbud with no loss and a vehicle fire at 807 N.J. with no damage reported.

Lawrence board to discuss 1971 72 budget and insurance plan

The Lawrence school board begins a 7 30 p m meeting Monday at the Administration Center 2017 La to distribute this year budget copies and hear a staff recommendation for a 46891 insurance contract a decrease from last year plus higher overall coverage and lower deductibles. The board will also review a transportation contract with R W Harmon and Sons and hear reports on intramural athletics school meals and a tax appeal related to the mentally retarded program.

Former KU Business Dean Frank Stockton Dies Today

Frank Tenney Stockton longtime dean emeritus of the Kansas University School of Business died at Lawrence Memorial Hospital at 84. Funeral services are set for Tuesday at Warren Chapel with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery. He helped organize the school and led it from 1924 to 1947 and later headed University Extension. He is survived by two sons and three grandchildren. memorials are requested for the local humane society.

Prisoners Swap Denim for Mod Attire in Heat

Douglas County Jail inmates dressed in light-weight jeans and gray tee shirts to beat Friday’s heat in Lawrence. With a 95 degree official reading and higher in cellblocks, inmates changed at 4:45 p.m. and reported the Mod outfit more comfortable than the heavy denim coveralls.

Parked Cars Hit in Accident Near Sixth and Ohio

Lawrence police report a 27 year old driver Molester Galloway from 1943 Del struck two parked cars at Sixth and Ohio. The Woods Ford Co. vehicle and Thomas Klaverkamp’s car were damaged or demolished with estimated sums of 2000 and 475 to 500 dollars. Major crash at Eighth and Vermont followed later that day.
