Different Rearming Ideas Stir White House Debate
Washington, July 27. James Marlow reports on diverging plans for rearming the nation. President Truman seeks partial government controls without full mobilization, Taft warns against overreach, and Baruch demands immediate all-out controls. Each urges readiness to meet potential worst-case aggression and a choice between peace and mobilization to safeguard freedom. The debate centers on taxes, credit, production, and possible rationing as the nation weighs its security path. The outcome hinges on how Congress and the public respond to these stark options.
