Perry Lake beaches closed over toxic algae levels

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment warned Perry Lake sections Rock Creek Arm and Old Town Public Use Area are unsafe due to blue green algae. Two swimming beaches, Swim Beach and Perry State Park Beach, are closed. advisory remains for the rest of the lake though boating and fishing continue. Pets should be kept away from water while humans should avoid contact.

Brownback forms NBAF steering committee in Kansas

Governor Sam Brownback on Friday announced a high level steering committee to push the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility to Kansas. U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts will chair the panel with other members including Sen. Jerry Moran and U.S. Reps. Lynn Jenkins Kevin Yoder Mike Pompeo and Tim Huelskamp. The NBAF to be built in Manhattan aims to study animal human and zoonotic diseases and bolster national defense. The project has $150 million spent on site prep and design and $105 million in state matching funds with completion planned for 2018.
