1944 Fall Pig Crop Shows Decline in Production

The Agriculture Department reports the 1944 fall pig crop at 31,825,000 head, down 4 percent from 1943. Prospects for 1945 remain weak due to reduced grain supplies and ongoing war demand, with civilian pork shortages likely to persist unless war ends or farm output rises. Combined 1944 spring and fall crops reach 86,753,000 head, 29 percent below the record 1948 crop, and about 15 percent under the 1933–42 average.
