Conscientious objectors not exempt from service ruling

Topeka December 22 In a majority decision U S Circuit Judge Walter A Haxman held that conscientious objectors may be excused from actual service but not from work of national importance under civil direction The ruling came in appeals of Igar Roodenko Donald West Rockwell James Glenn Hutchinson and Everett A White who challenged the act after camp assignments at Mancos Colorado They were sentenced to three years in prison for offenses including refusal to perform camp tasks and desertion The court preserved the right of the government to require work in lieu of combat service

Six Passengers Injured in California Limited Derailment
