Kansas debates new CoreCivic prison to replace aging Lansing unit
The Kansas Department of Corrections weighs a 20 year lease purchase with CoreCivic to build a consolidated 1,920 bed maximum and medium security prison plus a 512 bed minimum unit to replace the 150 year old Lansing facility. The plan, funded by operating savings and totaling about 293.9 million with maintenance, faces opposition from Sen. Laura Kelly and Rep. J R Claeys who favor bond financing and broader community bids. CoreCivic, under scrutiny for multiple lawsuits, would handle construction and major maintenance while the state operates the facility, with ownership reverting to Kansas at lease end. The State Finance Council plans to review the proposal in December.

Farmland clean up funds to guide long term remediation
Farmland accepted responsibility for cleaning environmental issues from the bankrupt fertilizer plant. The city received an $8.6 million trust fund from Farmland, now about $4.5 million, sufficient for decades of remediation. A long term plan could include new water treatment or infrastructure, with the City Commission to decide spending. Bids for consulting services are due December 19, and a consultant led Farmland study contract may go to the City Commission in March.
