Douglas County District Court Judge James McCabrin ruled 21 year old Rontarus Washington mentally fit to stand trial for the 2014 murder of a young woman at Cedarwood Apartments in Lawrence. Cheryl Wright Kunard said the decision in an email.
Douglas County Commissioners on Wednesday authorized moving forward with a jail expansion design that would add 179 beds at an estimated cost of 44 million dollars. The decision followed Undersheriff Gary Bunting outlining six expansion options and presenting three of them previously on November 8.
Douglas County jury found Hanbyt J. Chang, 20, Shawnee, guilty of one count of sexual battery, a misdemeanor. He faces sentencing December 12, with Judge Sally Pokorny noting the victim’s wish to speak. Chang must register as a sex offender for 15 years.
