Hot humid forecast for Northeast Kansas with possible showers
The forecast calls for hot and humid conditions with clear to partly cloudy skies through Tuesday and a chance of isolated thundershowers tonight. Low temperatures in the lower 70s and highs in the mid 90s to near 100 with southeast winds 5 to 15 mph. A fire at Quantrill's bar 715 Mass caused $50 damage after an electric panel box ignited around 5 p.m. Saturday. A grease overheated at the Dale Kerr residence 841 Rockledge around 6 p.m. Saturday causing $500 damage to the stove.

Lawrence Jaycees named Kansas's top chapter at convention
The Lawrence Jaycees led by President Mike Beahon were named the state’s No. 1 Jaycee chapter at the Kansas Jaycees summer quarterly convention in Wichita. Jim Kaiser won the Brownfield first year Jaycee award and Kaiser joined in March. Lawrence Fourth of July Fireworks won a community impact prize. Bonner Springs and Derby followed. Kaiser is a Naval ROTC aerospace student at Kansas University.

Rubber workers strike drags on as talks recessed
Labor Secretary W J Usery Jr. recessed marathon negotiations after 14 hours with United Rubber Workers and tire industry leaders. About 60,000 workers at 47 plants remained off the job as unions press for a $1.65 an hour raise over three years with a cost of living escalator. Talks to resume later today in Usery s offices followed a dawn pause.
