Cleanup work begins in Big Thompson Canyon
Two contractors with government cleanup bids start work today in the flood wrecked canyon. Starr and Sons receives 105000 from the Army Corps of Engineers to clear part of the debris while Tompkins and Co. of Oklahoma City gets 29000 for the remaining cleanup. Official death toll rises to 86 with two more bodies found, and authorities fear up to 100 more may be buried as looting and access control persist. A temporary highway will be built within four weeks, while a six month moratorium on other construction is set to study the floodplain.
