Second officer dead in flood near Estes Park

Relief officials cut down missing lists from the Big Thompson Canyon flood as the 38th victim, Estes Park officer Michael C. Conley, 30, was identified. Sgt. W. Hugh Purdy, 53, Loveland, was the first identified. FBI fingerprint teams noted 20 more identifications. about 80 bodies were moved to morgue facilities.

Canyon search extends as flood toll climbs near Drake

In Colorado's Big Thompson canyon, four wheel drive teams recovered three more bodies amid mud piles below Drake as Governor Lamm inspected the disaster zone. Officials cited a rising toll with 100 dead and more than 700 missing. Further excavations continued among submerged cars and trailers.

Audit triggers politics question in Topeka office

State Treasurer Joan Finney questions the audit of her office by the Division of Legislative Post Audit. Richard E. Brown, director of the watchdog arm, says there is no politics involved. Finney, a Democrat, seeks reelection in November and accuses the Bennett administration of trying to unseat her. In Lawrence, the municipal pool posted record July totals with 24 455 attendance and 8 991 receipts despite weather and a swim meet closing. Through Labor Day the pool remains open with shorter weekday hours when schools start.

County to review bids on closing Eudora dump

Douglas County officials meet to consider bids for filling and closing the three acre Eudora landfill shut down July 1. Anderson Excavating and Trucking Co. of Lawrence offered 8500 to cover the site with about two feet of dirt, three weeks needed. Fisher Excavating Co. offered 12000. Funds come from federal community development money. commission to decide to accept or rebid.

Dedication Set for Douglas County Extension Center

The Douglas County Extension Center at the county fairgrounds will be dedicated at 2 p.m. Sunday with a ceremony honoring the late Deal Six, county farm agent 30 years. An auditorium will be named for Mr. Six, who served 1935 to 1965, followed by a ribbon cutting and public open house until 5 p.m. Mrs. Gladys Six, his widow and former teacher, will speak. The $163000 building was funded by local taxes and revenue sharing. the old quarters were at Seventh and New Hampshire.

Freeman bets on steak dinners for union voters in Keys race

Republican challenger Ross Freeman offered to buy steak dinners for any registered voters in Kansas 2nd District who belong to unions listed as contributors to Martha Keys. He named Seafarers Political Activities Committee of Brooklyn and the New York Garment Workers Union, and noted Horton and Atchison areas as possible takers. Keys aides denied local union presence in Kansas and said most campaign funds come from outside the state.

Jury acquits AIM leader Russell Means in 1975 barroom slaying

In Rapid City, South Dakota, Circuit Court jurors acquitted American Indian Movement leader Russell Means of murder after 20 hours of deliberation in a three day trial. Means faced charges tied to the March 1975 Montileaux shooting at a Scenic bar. Richard Marshall had earlier been convicted and received a life sentence.
