Reading test results show mixed scores in Lawrence district

Lawrence district 497 students show strong reading performance on the Stanford test in lower grades but declines in upper grades. Fourth graders drop from the Iowa test top percentile to lower Stanford percentiles while eighth graders remain mid to high levels.

Lawrence High additions face delayed opening and repairs

Adds to Lawrence High are unlikely to be completed by the August 26 start and may not meet the September 1 deadline. Architect James Williams cites contractor readiness while the district fears ongoing work in fine arts vocational wings and a new gym.

New England Flood Disrupts Rail Lines and Roads

The storm Belle flooded parts of New England and New York City causing power outages on several New Haven lines while the Danbury branch remained in service. East-west parkways and Central Park roads were affected. By morning most problems cleared. Connecticut roads reopened but wind and water damage await assessment. Frank Mancuso warned several days to gauge total impact and crops, especially peaches and apples, suffered the worst.

Lawrence gardener flaunts giant garden produce

Leo Bellinger of 1019 Ala displayed two massive garden vegetables in the Journal-World newsroom. A pair of tomatoes weighed about 4 1/2 pounds total, with one especially large curved tomato. An onion near 1 1/2 pounds resembled a softball. Harvest grown at Fourth and Perry Streets in North Lawrence.

Lawrence man and daughter escape serious injury in crash

Leroy Walburn and his two year old daughter Kori were treated for minor cuts after their car hit a tree at 16th and Tenn. in a collision attributed to Catherine Cox who cut in front of Walburn. The crash caused about 2500 dollars in damage. Cox was cited for failure to signal and Walburn for unsafe speed.

Weather outlook with showers possible and hot Wednesday

Forecasters from the National Weather Service warn of a 30 percent chance of showers tonight with a low around 70. Sunny daytime conditions return Wednesday with a high near 100 after possible tonight storms.

Gas Price Hike Block Cleared With Consumer Refund Rule

Federal appeals court cleared a July 27 FPC price ceiling for natural gas, conditionally allowing a rise of 4 to 8 percent next year. Producers may raise prices only if they agree to refund excess funds if the commission later rules the ceiling too high. If not, they cannot raise prices during the appeal. The hike would lift residential bills by about 5.20 dollars in Florida and 23.14 dollars in Ohio, with total costs near 1.5 billion.

Congress moves to back swine flu inoculation plan
