Winchester Virginia gains status as a major livestock market hub in the East. Two markets in the area move a combined annual gross of 7 million plus, with three feeder sales by the Northern Virginia Livestock Producers Assn. handling thousands of calves yearlings and steer heifers. Large spring, fall, and October feeder calf sales attract over 1 500 head, up to 4 000 in peak years, aided by extension service and state divisions.

Silo Upgrade Cuts Feed Costs On Sangrey Farm

John Sangrey of Lancaster County adds a 90 by 18 by eight foot trench silo for corn silage to feed 140 head of steers. The cement block bunker with a dirt bank replaces dirt trenches and uses a rack system for self feeding. Grains may rise to meet lower quality silage while bean sorghum is damaged and corn yields fall.
