Reading and York Fall Fairs Open With Strong Attendance

The Reading and York Interstate fairs opened this week with near 200 head at Reading and 43 head at York. Winners included Warren Leininger for grand champion boar and female in Spotted Poland China, Stauffer Homestead Farms for Hampshire champions, and Ford Cooper with major swine awards. Lancaster judges and exhibitors were active, Lititz Farm Show will be condensed due to space, and next week Quarryville and Elizabethtown shows are planned.

Tobacco remains county’s top cash crop despite drought

Pennsylvania Eggs and Hay Prices Rise in August

State surveys show PA farmers received higher prices for eggs and baled hay in the month ending August 15. The price index rose to 250 percent of the 1919 14 base, with eggs up six cents per dozen to 45 cents and baled hay prices up to 28.10 per ton. Despite gains in some products, the crops index declined due to lower fruit prices, while wholesale milk prices rose slightly amid a small dairy herd increase.
