Pennsylvania Seed Leaf Tobacco Yields Fall Sharply in 1956

West Lampeter Fair aims for three day regional showcase

The West Lampeter Community Fair opens September 25 for three days with 17 departments including dairy cattle poultry vegetables and crafts. Daily judging offers a $25 savings bond and cash and ribbon awards. The twelfth Lancaster County Dairy Calf award features purebred heifers for vocational agriculture students. Learners will grade eggs by external appearance and judge poultry. At the upcoming contest no poultry will be judged. Eggs will be judged on both external and internal qualities.

Progressives DHIA Reports High Butterfat Across Herds

The Progressive Dairy Herd Improvement Association shows July results from 103 herds with 3,378 cows on test. Five herds exceeded 35 pounds fat with Vernon Umble’s herd leading at 38.5. Elmer Young top cow delivered 2,124 pounds milk and 99.8 pounds fat at 47 percent, with eight cows over 70 pounds fat.

Careful with Sudan Grass and 4H Baby Beef Projects

Farmers are urged to avoid grazing sudan grass until it reaches 15 inches to prevent prussic acid poisoning, especially after rains and killing frost. Lancaster County 4H clubs run steer feeding programs for fairs like the Pennsylvania and State Farm Show. Wheat should not be seeded before Oct 10 due to Hessian fly risk, except for Dual wheat. Fertilize winter grains with phosphorus and potash this fall to strengthen straw and reduce lodging, targeting 300 pounds per acre of 0-20-20 where feasible.

The Lancaster County 4 H Livestock Judging Team will compete at the Atlantic Rural Exposition in Richmond Virginia on Monday. Second Annual Feeders Tour To Be Oct. 8

The second annual tour for cattle feeders in Lancaster and surrounding counties is set for Tuesday Oct 8 chaired by Melvin G Rohrer R Lititz The 200 visited last year with plans this year to include feeder cattle operations fruit packing and processing plants in Franklin and Adams Counties In Chambersburg the tour will stop at Garnet Dice Bros farm a thousand acre operation wintering 200 head of cattle on silage and hay using self feeders A picnic at James Buchanan State Park then a tour of S A Heisey Sons fruit packing in Mercersburg Heisey owns 300 acres of apples 75 nectarines 60 peaches and a leading Farm Show winner The final stop is Musselman Processing Plant in Biglerville a major fruit and vegetable processor with apple butter sauce pie mixes and more.
