Dairy Worker's Image Shows Need for Better Farm Labor Management
A USDA study in New York State, based on interviews with nearly 200 dairy workers and operators, finds that while dairy work offers involvement and interesting tasks, pay, hours, and vacations lag behind comparable nonfarm jobs. It notes lack of formal contracts, unclear pay structures, and frequent conflicts from weak supervision and poor labor organization. California examples show standards and unions improving management.
