Beef Price Freeze Lifts September 12 Sparked Market Debate

Dick Warner reports on the impending end of the beef price freeze on September 12 with expectations of modest rises in live cattle prices from $50 to $52 and hopes prices won’t surge. Hog prices swing from 61 to 43 cents as producers fear losses. some warn a return to 30 cent hogs could ruin many farms while demand shifts to fish and poultry as red meat consumption drops. Restauranteurs urge lift of the freeze to restore standard pricing, noting menu markups depend on raw food costs and the old method.
