Dr. E. Trotter of Penn State reports in Science for the Farmer that Pennsylvania livestock auctions now average over 75 million dollars in sales annually. The study notes sales more than doubled in the last decade, with 61 licensed auctions serving farms within 30 miles of their rooms and about 70 percent of the 14 percent million animals sold in the state passing through auctions. Average auction lots ranged from 400 to 1500 animals.
