Guernsey Sale Tops 2550 With 30 Lots At Convention Sale

The Pennsylvania Guernsey Breeders Association sold 30 cows at the Meeting of the Stars convention sale in Guernsey Sales Pavilion near Lancaster. A July 18, 1953 cow Bayville Max print Bubblemist brought $2550 to Deep Lake Farm, while first ten head averaged $975 and six sold at or above $1000. Notable bids included Fer-Manor Marva Lu at $1100 and Mid view’s Sally at $1100. Buyers came from multiple states. none of the stock sold directly in Lancaster County.

Windstorm Caused Heavy Damage Across Southern Lancaster and Chester

A Sunday night windstorm with heavy rains ripped trees from roots and blasted barns open near Kirkwood Oxford area. Tornadic winds caused about 10000 dollars in damage at the Arthur Astle farm east of Octoraro Lake. Russellville Grange members aided cleanup on Tuesday morning removing debris and buried machinery.

Landis Valley Expansion Approved in Manheim Township

The Pennsylvania Senate unanimously approved a House backed proposal to buy about three acres in Manheim Township for Landis Valley Farm Museum expansion. The land, owned by Elmer Landis, costs $8,000 and adds a 300 foot Route 222 frontage extending east from the current property.

Benson Points To Two Items Objectionable

Secretary Ezra Taft Benson said H. R. 10875 the Soil Bank bill progressed past the House improves on the vetoed measure. He noted supports for corn at 125 dollars in the commercial area and criticized mandatory price supports for feed grain as objectionable, warning it would affect about 100 million (figures truncated).

Governor George M. Leader signed into law a measure allowing Pennsylvania farmers to apply for a full refund of all state taxes on gasoline and other liquid fuels used in tractors and farming machinery.

Four-H Winners Honored by Lancaster ABC

About 50 Lancaster businessmen heard four 4H champions explain their projects at the Arcadia. County agents Max Smith and Victor Plastow noted nearly 1200 active Lancaster County 4H members with 20 agriculture clubs and 30 home economics clubs. Pam Ulrich presented cufflinks or earrings to the four winners, including Dorothy Stedman who spoke of her lambs, beef, poultry, tobacco and home economics entries and her Shropshire pen grand championship at the 1956 Farm Show.
