Pond Fertilization for Trout Rearing

Weingard explains that trout ponds require fertilization to maintain food for the fish. Use 100 pounds of 8-8-4 or 5-10-5 plus 25 pounds of ammonium nitrate per acre, applied in warm weather when the water lacks a greenish blue cast. Dense micro plant life should obscure objects 18 inches deep.

Fire Protection Recreation From Well Built Farm Pond

Penn State specialists say a well designed farm pond can supply fire protection, livestock water and recreation. Farm Pond Building Guide By Mc Curdy Weingard

Mc Curdy outlines pond siting and construction with a steady two inch water source as ideal plus a divertible stream and drained access. He prescribes heavy clay dam fill six to ten feet wide with two to one wet slope and three to one dry slope and a six inch overflow. Weingard favors warm water fish, recommends bluegill and smallmouth bass with heavy harvest to balance the population, and discourages trout due to warm water.
