Helicopter Spray Operations Reach Lancaster County
Farmers in Lancaster County experiment with a helicopter spray program for tobacco and tomatoes. Gibbs Co. operates a 668-acre farm at Little Texas with 300 acres under contract and hopes for a permanent heliport. The craft, loaded with Malathion, sprays aphids and spittlebugs, covering up to 17 acres per load, with 80 acres per hour capacity. A chase across Route 222 ends with a landing near Barren Crossroads, thrilling local farmers and signaling the arrival of air-age farming.
