Octoraro Farmers Club Marks 100 Years With Anniversary
The Octoraro Farmers Club celebrated its centennial with a 1906 style 50th anniversary event held in a woodland grove near Green Tere on Valley Road. Wheat headline banners, strawberry letters, pumpkin sardinieres and rambling roses decorated the grounds while the Sadsbury Orchestra provided music. Albany Walton led the gathering as president in 1906 with Josephine Brinton as secretary.

Haymaking Prevails as County Reports Good Yields
Lancaster County hayfields show at least average yields as haymaking dominates farm duties amid hot clear weather. Post emergent spraying for weeds in corn continues with corn ankle to foot tall. Max M. Smith recommends six to twelve inch spray height before using drop nozzles after a foot. Hail damage last weekend was spotty, mainly around Rohrerstown Mountville and Landisville.

Notable Penn State Grad Wins County Conservation Honor
Lancaster County celebrates Arthur E Brown 65 of Nottingham as Outstanding County Conservationist 1956. A Penn State agronomy graduate, he owns a 103 acre Brown farm near Elam focusing on dairy production with 40 Guernsey cows and 25 heifers. Brown promotes soil conservation, uses strip farming, and markets Golden Guernsey milk through Abbotts in Philadelphia.

Story of the Lancaster Union Stock Yards booklet released
A new booklet titled The Story of the Lancaster Union Stock Yards by Frederic Shriver Kline of Franklin and Marshall College has limited distribution. It features sixteen full page illustrations and a two color cover with an aerial stock yards view on the back. At a June 5 Lancaster Live Stock Exchange meeting the booklet was announced. The meeting also set Aug 14 15 for Garden Spot Baby Beef Show and Nov 6 7 8 for a Southeastern District 4H Baby Beef Lamb roundup and sale at the Stock Yards.

Nancy Newcomer crowned Lancaster County Poultry Queen
Nancy Newcomer, 20, daughter of Mr and Mrs J Raymond Newcomer of R2 Lititz, was crowned Lancaster County Poultry Queen and will reign during the coming year attending state functions.

The event served an estimated 7100 to 7200 portions of barbecued chicken with at least 8850 pounds of chicken consumed. Forty racks operated and two 65 foot pits cooked the meat while gallons of barbecue sauce filled the tables.
